ALTON -- Jeremy Hill and Jvonta Williams were the perfect recipe to help Belleville West snap a four-game slide.
The senior running backs both rushed for more than 100 yards and accounted for five rushing touchdowns as the Maroons blasted Alton 35-0 Friday night in a Southwestern Conference matchup at Public School Stadium.
Hill scored three times and rushed for 118 yards on 19 carries, while Williams only ran the ball six times, but had a game-high 134 rushing yards and two scores as the Maroons won for the first time within the conference and improved to 2-5 overall (1-4 SWC
"It all started to work in the first half," Hill said, "thanks to the O-line. They had good blocks set up. They were blocking good. I loved it. It was a great feeling."
Hill scored on touchdown runs from 35 and 5 yards in the first half as the Maroons opened up a 14-0 lead.
West opened the game up in the third quarter with 21 points, including two scores in a 54-second span after a pair of Alton turnovers.
"I'm proud to see them have a little success tonight," West coach Cameron Pettus said. "You don't know what's going to work until you play the game and (the running game) got it going tonight. We were happy."
A fumble led to a 12-yard Williams touchdown run with 3:26 to play in the third quarter, which was followed by an interception that led to Hill's third score of the game, a 7-yard run after Tremont Davis' interception.
"I was very proud of their effort," Pettus said of his defense. "They were flying around to the ball all night long. The coaches did a great job getting those kids ready."
The Redbirds, who fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the SWC, believed this was a game they could win and break into the win column after putting up 19 first-half points on Belleville East last week.
Senior quarterback Lawrence Moore seemed to bring some new life into a stagnant offense. But on this night, the Redbirds offense was held to 209 yards.
"They've got some pretty good athletes on defense," Alton coach Dwight Tungett said of West. "They're not real big up front like us, so what they did was they set the edge and they didn't let Lawrence get outside. They took him away.
"We had some open receivers that dropped balls. If you don't block and tackle, that's the bottom line."
Williams' 86-yard run up the middle with 1:16 to play in the third quarter accounted for rest of the scoring, as West nearly scored as many points in this game as the 46 they had scored in their previous six games combined.
"It feels good to get one," Pettus said. "We're better than a 1-5 team (coming in). We've just got to do a better job, and we all did tonight. This was a complete team effort."
